"Allowed memory size of ... bytes exhausted" in WordPress

PHP gave WordPress a fixed amount of memory. A plugin, theme or import needed more, and PHP stopped the page in the middle. The number in the message is the limit it hit.

What to do, in order

  1. Read the file path in the message. It names the plugin or theme that ran out. That is your suspect.
  2. Raise the limit. In wp-config.php, above the line that says "That's all, stop editing", add define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');. Save and reload.
  3. If nothing changes, your host caps PHP lower than that. Raise memory_limit in the host's PHP settings panel, or ask support to set it to 256M.
  4. If it comes back, the plugin from step 1 is leaking. Rename its folder in wp-content/plugins to switch it off, then update or replace it.
  5. Cannot reach the admin at all: do steps 2 and 4 over FTP or the host's file manager. They do not need a login.

If it still fails, send me the address and I will tell you which step is broken.
