Website loads without CSS: plain text, no styling
The page arrives, but the stylesheet does not. You see black text on white, links in blue, images stacked down the left.
What to do, in order
- Open the browser console. Press F12, then the Console tab. A red line naming a .css file tells you which file failed and why.
- "Mixed content" in the console means the page is https but the stylesheet is linked over http. Change the link to https. In WordPress, check that the site address in Settings, General starts with https.
- A 404 on the .css file means the path is wrong. This often happens after moving the site to a new folder or domain. Fix the path, or run a search and replace on the old domain.
- A "MIME type" error means the server sends the file as text/html, usually because the path returns an error page. Fix the path first. If the file exists, your server needs
text/css set for .css.
- Clear every cache. Caching plugins, Cloudflare and your host can serve an old page that links a stylesheet that no longer exists. Purge them all.
If it still fails, send me the address and I will tell you which step is broken.
