"Website Expired" on your Squarespace site: what it means and how to fix it

If your address shows a page that says Website Expired, Squarespace has stopped serving your site. Your content is almost certainly still there. The billing lapsed.

What it means

Squarespace shows this page when the site subscription ends, a card payment fails, or a trial runs out. Visitors see it instead of your site. Search engines see it too, and a long outage can push your pages down in results.

What to do, in order

  1. Log in at squarespace.com with the email that owns the site. If you do not know which email, search your inbox for "Squarespace" receipts.
  2. Open the expired site. Squarespace will show a billing prompt. Pick a plan and enter a card that works.
  3. Check the domain separately. Under Settings, Domains, look at the renewal date. A site plan and a domain are billed apart. Either one lapsing takes you offline.
  4. Load your address on your phone, on mobile data, not Wi-Fi. If the site shows, you are done.
  5. Turn on auto-renew for both the plan and the domain, and update the card on file.

If you cannot log in

Use the password reset. If the account belonged to a former staff member or a web designer, contact Squarespace support with proof you own the business. Do it soon. Squarespace keeps expired sites for a limited time before removing them.
