Shopify custom domain not connecting: "Domain is not pointing to Shopify"

Shopify checks two DNS records. If either is wrong, the domain stays unconnected and the store may show an SSL error. The records are edited where your domain's DNS lives, not in Shopify.

What to do, in order

  1. Find who runs your DNS. Run dig +short NS yourdomain.com. Edit records at that company. If it says Cloudflare, edit them in Cloudflare.
  2. Set the root record. The A record for @ must be 23.227.38.65. Delete any other A or AAAA records on @. Leftover records from an old host are the most common cause.
  3. Set the www record. www must be a CNAME to shops.myshopify.com. Not an A record, and not a forward.
  4. Turn off the Cloudflare proxy. If you use Cloudflare, set both records to "DNS only" (grey cloud). The orange cloud stops Shopify issuing its certificate.
  5. Verify again in Shopify. Settings, Domains, your domain, Verify connection. The certificate can take up to 48 hours after the records are right.

If it still will not connect, send me the domain and I will tell you which record is wrong.
