Google Search Console: "Page with redirect" and "Redirect error"

These are two different things. "Page with redirect" is usually fine: Google found an address that forwards somewhere else and indexed the destination instead. "Redirect error" is a real problem: Google followed the forward and got lost.

What to do, in order

  1. Look at the listed addresses. If they are the http version, the non-www version, or old pages you moved on purpose, "Page with redirect" needs no action.
  2. Make sure your sitemap lists only final addresses. Every link in it should load directly with a 200, not forward. Old addresses in the sitemap keep the report filling up.
  3. For "Redirect error", trace the chain. Run curl -sIL https://yoursite.com/page | grep -i -E "^(HTTP|location)". More than two hops, a loop back to the start, or a forward to an empty address are the usual causes.
  4. Common loop: the host forces https, and a plugin or Cloudflare forces http (or www and non-www fight). Pick one rule in one place.
  5. After fixing, press Validate Fix in Search Console. Google rechecks over days, not minutes.

If you want the chain traced for you, send me the address and I will show every hop.
