"Page indexed without content" in Google Search Console: what it means and how to fix it

Google fetched the page, kept it in its index, and found nothing to read on it. The page shows up as a blank for searchers, so it will not rank. Usually Google was blocked from the real content or got an empty answer.

What to do, in order

  1. Use URL Inspection, then "Test live URL". Open "View tested page" and look at the screenshot and HTML. If they are empty or show an error, Google sees what you do not.
  2. Check robots.txt for blocked files. If your theme's scripts or CSS sit in a folder that robots.txt blocks, Google cannot build the page. Remove those Disallow lines.
  3. Check your firewall and Cloudflare. A bot-fight mode, a security plugin, or a country block can serve Googlebot a challenge page or nothing at all. Allow verified Googlebot through.
  4. Check if the page needs JavaScript to show text. Load it with JavaScript turned off. If it is blank, Google may index the empty shell. Server-side rendering or a pre-rendered version fixes it.
  5. Request indexing again. After the fix, use "Request indexing" in URL Inspection. It can take a few days to clear from the report.

Check it yourself

Run curl -s -A "Googlebot" https://yourdomain.com/page | head -c 2000. If you see your text, the server answers bots. If you see a challenge, a 403, or almost nothing, that is what Google sees too.
