"ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT" on your own website

The browser found your server's address and knocked. Nothing answered before it gave up. The server is off, overloaded, or a firewall is dropping the knock.

What to do, in order

  1. Test from outside your network. Open the site on your phone with Wi-Fi off. If it loads there, the problem is your office network or your own IP being blocked.
  2. Check your host's status page and dashboard. A stopped server, an unpaid bill or a resource limit will look exactly like this.
  3. Check the DNS points where you think. Run dig +short yoursite.com. If the address is an old server you moved away from, update the A record at your domain registrar.
  4. Check the firewall. Ports 80 and 443 must be open. Security plugins and fail2ban sometimes block your own IP after a few wrong logins. Ask the host to unblock it.
  5. Restart the web server (Apache or Nginx) from the host panel, then reload.

If it still fails, send me the address and I will tell you which step is broken.
