"This domain is not connected to a website": what it means and how to fix it

This message comes from your website builder or host. Your domain name still works and points to them. They just have no site to show on it.

What it means

It is shown by Squarespace, Wix, GoDaddy, Shopify and others when the domain is registered and pointing at them, but no published site is linked to it. Common causes: the site plan lapsed, the site was unpublished, or someone moved the site and did not move the domain setting.

What to do, in order

1. Find out who shows the message. The page usually carries the builder's logo or name in small print. That is where you log in.
2. Log in and check the site plan is active and the site is published.
3. Find the domain settings for that site and make sure your domain is attached to it. The button is usually called Connect, Assign or Add domain.
4. Check the domain itself is paid up. Run a lookup at lookup.icann.org and read the expiry date.
5. Wait up to an hour and load the address on your phone on mobile data.

If you moved to a new host

The domain still points at the old one. Log in where the domain is registered and change the records to the ones your new host gives you.
